Union Bay Watch: Bald eagles and other baby birds all grown up

Union Bay Watch has two recent posts (here and here) about spring hatchlings becoming summer fledglings. The youngest of this year’s 520 bald eagles has finally learned to fly and it seems the whole family has moved on to other hunting grounds — birder Larry Hubbell hasn’t seen them in over two weeks. Anyone out there seen Eva & family?

Other youngsters are out making their way in the world. This Pileated Woodpecker was spotted near Foster Island, presumed young because of its not-quite-full head of red feathers. Its pecking was interrupted when a bird of prey approached… find out what happened and read up on other species over at UBW.
